The Final Problem Resolved

by Duncan Baldwin

“You are correct sir, I have been sent by your brother Mycroft.  Let me introduce myself, I am John Grimm, but people call me Jack. Here is a letter of introduction from your brother,” he talked as he unlocked the briefcase, and brought forth from it a hand written note I recognized as my brothers handwriting.
“Sherlock,” it began, “Assuredly you have observed that the young man presenting this letter to you is professional in manner and significantly familiar to you although I understand you have never met him.  He is in fact, the nephew of your close acquaintance, Dr. John H. Watson.” This quickly brought my eyes up and onto my visitor.  I now connected his brow and eyes to the similarly faced personage of his uncle, although his jaw was cut sharper and he was clean-shaven.
“Yes, Mr. Holmes, I am John Watson’s nephew.  In fact, my father named me after my Uncle. My mother divorced my father, because of my dad’s frequent falling into alcoholic binges. She took me with her to Germany to escape him and remarried, I took my stepfather’s surname. I have never really spent any time with my Uncle, and barely knew any of his various wives.
You will read that I am in fact in service to the British government in secret affairs on the Continent. I am fluent in German, French, and Russian.”
“And comfortable with firearms,” I interjected and pointed to the concealed weapon that slightly malformed his excellently cut jacket.
“Ah, necessary tool of my trade…” he muttered as he looked down and absent mindedly patted smooth his jacket over the holster.
“Let me finish my brother’s letter then you can brief me, I see that you are concerned of some danger.” I stated as I returned my attention to the correspondence.
“I had previously also noticed the circumstances on the Continent you detected,” it continued.
“ Your contacts are separate from mine, though positioned not dissimilar.  There is something of concern I assure you.  You informants have provided the fill for holes I had.  I have now to construct a true vision of what is developing, but I needed more specifics to present to my former superiors, in order for them to authorize the necessary actions and reveal particulars that had been kept from me in my retired state (bureaucratic asses).  You know I don’t leave my quarters except for my visits to my club.  But, I had and now have access to numerous active agents across the Continent.
Jack is one of our countries top agents, although young, he has extensive experience.  He has been in deep cover, as they call it, until recently when he was called out to personally brief his superiors and they in turn sent him around to me.  He had just recently returned with information that had been gathered all across Europe by our diverse field agents and embassy attachés.
We know of a growing project that is significant in its resources and scope.  But we do not know exactly what is being created. The center of the emanations is clearly coming from Prussia and Germany, and I believe are militaristic in nature.  Yet, there are political factors involved here in England.  There are as well some concerns with Imperialistic Russia.
There also is a nagging side factor that I cannot tie directly to the main project, but interests me immensely.  I will ruminate on the meaning of this some more before I confer with you. Let Jack brief you on what he has and the conclusions I gave him.
Mycroft
P.S. I do believe you will shortly be straying off your beloved Bee farm dear brother, drop by my club for dinner if you find yourself in London.”
“Alright Jack, brief me.” I stated as I lay the letter down on the desk.
Jack once again removed a document from his briefcase and handed it to me.  It was a binder with extensive letters, memos and analysis summaries.
“Mr. Holmes, I had been overseeing several of our Continental agents who had been following a series of developments in several countries.  We knew that something was growing that had implications of militarist import from the mounting concerns in several fields of significance.  You can review their reports, or rather summaries in that document you have there.  We sent our findings to the home office who referred our reports to your brother. He send out inquires for us to investigate and we returned the results. His conclusion, confirmed by further inquires was that there now existed a web
