The Final Problem Resolved

by Duncan Baldwin

Watson grimly went off to have the remains of his wife prepared and sent back home. He made sure the casket was sealed with a medical label warning that a possible contagious disease was the cause of death. He heartlessly joked to everyone how much richer he had become when she died so early and left him her great wealth.  No one asked why he wasn’t accompanying the body when they thought the marriage was merely for financial advancement.
Jack had us prepare to accompany him.  Watson shaved his mustache off, and I stopped shaving and died my hair Arian blond.  We purchased German workman clothes, tool belts and tool boxes.  We each had purchased tough and large backpacks to carry the dynamite that was clandestinely delivered to our hotel late at night through the service stairs.
Four days later we got the coded telegram that authorized our mission, and a local bank account that we were to draw a huge amount of money from for necessities.
We had our travel belongings shipped to hotel in Zurich, Switzerland to be stored until we would show up for an indeterminate visit.  We then hired a private carriage to take us discreetly into Germany.  There we purchased our own workman’s wagon that had a large square cab with a door on the back. It is nice to spend unlimited government funds when given a blank check so to speak.
We arrived in town and Jack went into the top-secret facility to reconnoiter and determine the current status of the project and the whereabouts of the Professor.  We were camping just outside town in our workman’s wagon, which we had generously supplied with bedding and groceries, drinks and tobacco for a possible extended stay.
Jack found us around a campfire two days later.  His news was grim.
“The Professor,” we forbid ourselves to utter the name Moriarty anytime on this mission until it was concluded, “has advanced farther than I thought possible.  He has set up the test of the combined weapon for this Friday.
A remarkable assignment has been given me.  I am to find out what has happened to Fritz! The Professor was told by him he was following a disturbing lead, but never reported back or showed up at any of our European stations.  I am to coordinate a search of his home and offices to determine what he found that disturbed him. I am to follow any clues to where he went and where he was killed.  The Professor knows only death would have kept him from returning with a report.
“In order to get a better understanding of what Fritz was doing I was given a briefing.  He was in fact leader in the security of the Professor’s three laboratories.  The Professor is unsure which facility had the probable breach.
“And he then allowed me to stand in the back of the room when he briefed his project team on the coming test. He would not be able to be there himself as the Kaiser wanted to see the latest device and wanted it personally brought to the Krupp factory.  The Professor had made two combined weapons because of the possibility of the experiment blowing up as had previous tests. The extremely high temperatures and pressures would barely be controlled until several tests could be accomplished and learning how to control the explosions. The manner of the Kaiser tolerated no declining, despite the cost and effort to set up a second site. The Professor would split his test team into two groups and bring one with him. I am to accompany him, both for my assigned investigation and to temporarily replace Fritz as security head.
“We leave on Thursday; so I am afraid I must leave the sabotage to you two chaps.  I have these maps, time schedules and keys that will secure your entrance to the project.  You will be given papers with my signature that will get you past all guards.  Your cover will be delivery of additional test equipment that the Professor has ordered installed around the weapon since he will not be able to oversee the tests.  The equipment will be said to not be for this initial test, but for the next sequence.  You will be placing them, but they will be ignored for now, because the set up will take more time than currently available. This means that the equipment strategically placed and then ignored by the team.  It has in fact false instrumentation on the top and a deep compartment where we will be placing the explosives. There are clockwork timers that will be set once the charges are placed.
“The kick in the backside to the Professor is that I am having these boxes made by his own shops, unknown to the test team, they will think they were brought from another facility. You will surreptitiously bring the dynamite in your tool boxes when you report to work.
“It will be damn dangerous and I do cannot project the chance of success.  But we must cut it close and time the destruction to be done during the test.  This will make it seem that much more study must be done, and give me time to sabotage its twin.  Dash rummy hand dealt us, but that is the cards we are holding.
